Working is an activity, such as a job, that a person uses physical or mental effort to do, usually for money, according to Cambridge dictionary. In Indonesia itself, overtime by employees in Indonesia is allowed under certain conditions. Indonesian Law Number 13 of 2003 regarding Manpower (Labor Law) and its implementing regulation in Decree of Manpower and Transmigration Minister Number 102/MEN/VI/2004 regarding Overtime and Overtime Wages set these conditions. Based on the foregoing, employees are working overtime if the work time exceeds the seven hours per day in a six day work week, or the eight hours per day in a five day work week, or on weekly rest days, or on Indonesian public holidays.
Long working hours can be beneficial for both employees and companies. It provides the company with the flexibility to cover unexpected absences and changes in demand without hiring more staff and it gives employees extra income at a premium rate. However, long working hours has its disadvantages too. While many employees will happily take as much overtime as is available, there is growing scientific evidence that relying too much on overtime can lead to numerous problems for an operation. The long working hours definitely affect the employee’s work life. Work life integration is important to organizations, individual workers, families and societies as they can affect organizational/worker performance as well as non-work life functioning (Noon & Blyton, 2007).
